An evaluation of the results oftransreoal ultrasound-guided biopsy of the prostate

A. Čermák, D. Pacík
Urologická klinika FN Brno-Bohunice

In the period from November 1995 to December 1997,216 prostate puncture biopsies were made at the Department of Urology of University Hospital in Brno.
Transrectal biopsy under ultrasound control (TRUS) and examination in two planes were the methods used.
Because DRE, PSA serum level and sonographic examination are not specific enough, a histologie examination is necessary for the confirmation of the diagnosis of prostate carcinoma.
The indications for the biopsy to be made were: abnormal palpation findings, increased PSA level or a suspect sonographic finding. Sextant biopsies were made in the case of hypoechogenic lesions, or further samples were taken from the lesion in the case of a suspect palpation finding.
The study includes 216 patients (average age of 68 years, in the range from 46 to 84 years. The results of positive histologie examinations were followed in relation to increased PSA before biopsy, to a suspect palpation finding and a suspect I RUS finding. Patients with repeated biopsy and elevated PSA were also included.
The incidence of complications (haematuria, enterorrhagy, haemospermia, febrility, sepsis, prostate abscess) and the relation of complications to the ensuing hospitalisation were also evaluated.
