The aim of study was evaluation of the antibiotic prophylaxis effectivity in trans-rectal biopsy of prostate. 102 patients with transrectal biopsy of prostate performed in 1999, suspected for prostate cancer, were evaluated. Antibiotic was administrated in the time as biopsy or exceptionally up to 30 minutes after. 90 patients (88,2 %) have received cotrimoxazol 960 mg twice a day, 6 patients (5,9 %) have received ciprofloxacin 250 mg twice a day and 6 patients (5,9 %) ofloxacin 200 mg twice a day. Therapy has lasted 5 days in non-complicated cases. Dysuric complaints has been detected in 15 (14,7 %) patients, fever over 38° C in 2 (2 %) cases and in 2 (2 %) cases patient had to be readmitted to the hospital for septic state. It was neccessary to change the treatment from cotrimoxazol to chinolon because of the alergie reaction in 5 (4,7 %) patients. Cotrimoxazol is safe and low-cost choice for prophylaxis in transrectal prostatic biopsy. Chinolons are used in special indications only.
