The aim of the study is to evaluate the role and effectiveness of the treatment of plastic induration of penis with the administration of interferon-alpha 2b. We treated altogether 16 patients withl local application of interferon-alpha 2b (Intron?, Roferon A?) into the plaque from march 1999 to april 2003. The dose was 3 milion IU directly into the plaque weekly, altogether 3-15 times.
Subjective improvement was seen in all 16 patients: the curvation of penis diminished in 15 patients (94 %), pain during erection disappeared in 16 patients (100 %), and change in consistency and size of the plaque occured in 11 patients (69 %). Improvement in erection occured in 12 patients (75 %). Side effects (flu-like syndrome, myalgias) occurred in all 16 patients (100 %), but the were only transient and they disappeared in 24 hours.
The administration of interferon-alpha 2b into the plaque in plastic induration of penis represents an effective, safe, and well tolerated option of local treatment
