Aim: The aim of the present paper is a comparison between the validity and the economic relevance of the PCR examination in samples of urine and urethral secretion.

Methods and results: Infections provoked by Chlamydia trachomatis have a high prevalence in our population. Precise data concerning the Czech Republic are not known because the disease is not obligatorily reportable. The disease usually has an asymptomatic or an oligosymptomatic course. The detection of the infection is technically as well as economically demanding. Along with more sensitive methods, there is a signif cant increase of cost covered by the insurance company for determining the diagnosis. The PCR and LCR amplif cation approaches belong to the most convenient and most sensitive methodologies. Apart from the price, their application is also limited by a frequency restriction.

Conclusion: Restriction of both examinations (urine and urethral swabs) leads to high probability of missing the correct diagnosis. So that negative impact on QL of patients and their health status can be expected.
